AI Literacy Is Not Optional: How Microlearning Can Support Workforce Upskilling

2025 was the year of AI experimentation for many organizations. Teams tested tools, piloted use cases, and explored possibilities. That experimentation phase is ending. 2026 will be the year organizations are expected to operationalize AI at scale. This shift will require workers across generations to fundamentally rethink how they integrate the technology in their day-to-day workflows.

By 2030, an estimated 70% of the skills used in most jobs will change, with AI literacy topping the list. The ability to work effectively with AI is no longer a differentiator, it’s fast becoming a baseline expectation. It is quickly becoming a baseline expectation that will separate high-performing employees and organizations from those that fall behind.

However, the workforce’s relationship with AI remains complicated. Nearly one third of workers believe AI will lead to fewer job opportunities for them in the long run. While many professionals are actively trying to keep pace, more than half say keeping up with AI feels like having a second job.

The challenge organizations face is no longer providing access to AI tools but ensuring employees understand how to use them effectively, responsibly, and in the context of real work. The gap between organizations that win with AI and those that stall won’t have access to tools, it will be how quickly their people become confident, capable users.

The Human Advantage

A company is only as innovative as its people. AI’s greatest opportunity is not to replace the workforce, but to upskill it, redefining productivity, creativity, and the quality of outcomes. When positioned correctly, AI becomes a learning assistant rather than a replacement for expertise. It augments human judgment, supporting better decision-making and problem-solving instead of thinking for employees. This distinction matters. Employees are far more likely to adopt AI when it is framed as a tool that strengthens their capabilities rather than threatens their relevance.

There’s also a talent dimension. Investment in AI enablement has become a competitive differentiator for attracting and retaining top performers. People want to work for organizations that are preparing them for the future, not leaving them to figure it out alone. Unfortunately, most corporate training programs aren’t meeting this moment. Long sessions, dense slide decks, and large volumes of information delivered all at once make it increasingly difficult for employees to retain knowledge, especially when business doesn’t pause to accommodate learning.

Employees are expected to hit deadlines, meet targets, and deliver results while simultaneously reskilling for a rapidly changing future. When learning feels like an interruption, adoption stalls. When learning reduces friction and clearly answers “What’s in it for me?”, usage becomes organic.

For complex topics like AI, a human-centered approach is essential.

A New Generation of Learners

Many upskilling programs are still rooted in the outdated belief that everyone learns the same way. We now know this simply isn’t true. Visual and auditory formats have consistently been shown to improve learning outcomes. At the same time, awareness of learning disabilities and neurodiversity has increased, with around 20% of the population identifying as neurodiverse. Yet most workplace training still assumes a one-size-fits-all approach, unintentionally creating learning gaps.

AI presents a critical moment to reevaluate how organizations approach training and ensure equitable access to upskilling. Today’s learners expect information to be searchable, visual, and immediately applicable. Employees want to learn at work the same way they learn at home, by watching short videos (e.g. YouTube), asking quick questions (e.g. GPT), and getting answers in the moment.  Why should the workplace experience be any different?

Video and AI make it possible to close that gap. Together, they allow organizations to move beyond static training and toward adaptive learning experiences that meet people where they are – in skill level, learning preference, and moment of need. When knowledge exists but can’t be found at the moment of need, it may as well not exist at all.

The Power of Microlearning

Microlearning delivers training in small, digestible chunks. Instead of multi-hour sessions or exhaustive courses, it focuses on concise and targeted modules, typically just three to seven minutes long, each centered on a single learning objective.

The strength of microlearning lies in its simplicity. It allows employees to quickly access relevant information without the cognitive overload common in traditional training. For a fast-evolving topic like AI, this makes learning feel achievable rather than overwhelming.

But microlearning’s real value isn’t in content consumption, it’s decision support. The most effective microlearning experiences don’t just provide answers; they guide reasoning in moments of uncertainty, reinforcing confidence and competence when it matters most. Short learning moments delivered at the right time consistently outperform long courses delivered at the wrong time.

Video + AI: The Backbone of Modern Microlearning

Video makes abstract concepts more concrete and memorable. Visual demonstrations, real scenarios, and expert walkthroughs provide context that text alone cannot. Quizzes and interactive elements encourage active recall, while infographics help simplify complexity. In remote and hybrid environments, video also recreates a form of learning osmosis that once depended on physical proximity, observing how others work, solve problems, and make decisions.

Consistency and building trust matter. Clear communication around how an organization intends to use AI, along with guidelines and expectations, is essential. Recorded materials ensure every employee receives the same message, understands organizational guardrails, and sees how AI applies to their role. This matters in regulated and complex environments, where accuracy, security, and context are as important as speed.

When AI is layered onto video, microlearning evolves from static content into a living knowledge system. AI-powered search allows employees to jump directly to the exact moment in a video where a concept is explained, reducing time spent hunting for answers. Enterprise video and AI platforms also provide governance and accuracy, reducing reliance on unverified external sources for critical information.

In other words, employees learn from trusted, organization-specific knowledge, in formats designed for real work.

Measuring Impact: Why Microlearning Drives ROI

The return on investment for microlearning shows up most clearly in three areas: time saved, quality improved, and agility gained. Organizations that embed microlearning into the flow of work see faster onboarding, fewer errors, and quicker adaptation to change. AI-powered analytics enable learning leaders to move beyond basic completion rates and understand where employees struggle, which gaps persist, and how learning affects performance.

The question then shifts from “Did people finish the training?” to “Did learning change how work gets done?”  This reframes learning from a cost center to a performance lever.

The Path Forward

The accelerated pace of change is forcing companies and employees to reevaluate how they approach innovation and talent development. With technology evolving every three to six months, yesterday’s knowledge can quickly become obsolete. That uncertainty is already creating anxiety in the workforce and, in some cases, driving top talent elsewhere.

Organizations now have a clear opportunity: equip employees with tools and learning experiences that make them more productive, engaged, and creative. Microlearning, supported by video and AI, offers a scalable, adaptive, and human-centered approach to building AI literacy.

The bottom line is clear: AI literacy is no longer optional. The organizations that win will be those that build it in ways that respect how people actually learn and work.
